Cough Syrup

Produced by The Centre for Industry Education Collaboration (CIEC), these materials put curriculum science in a real-life context. The activities are based on the development of a new cough syrup.

Children identify the best conditions for growing micro-organisms to produce the active ingredient in the cough medicine, and the best way to collect it. They then look at the ideal consistency for the cough medicine syrup. This involves measuring and adjusting the runniness, or viscosity, of liquids.

Economic and commercial factors are also considered in the production of the cough syrup.

Teacher guidance, children activity sheets and a presentation illustrating the use of timers and the measurement of viscosity are included.
