Temperature
After experimenting with frozen strawberries and instant ice-cream on The Interactive Temperature Lab stand, why not try one of these lesson ideas and make your own ice-cream back in the classroom to investigate energy transfer and temperature change? The resources in this list use ice pops and snowmen to explore energy changes in open investigations.
Investigating Ice
Lesson ideas for Key Stage One and Two involving observation, measuring and recording the melting of ice. This resource is a set of lesson activity ideas including questions to investigate, levelled assessment and suggestions for further activities.
Materials
A video showing a lesson idea for a Key Stage One insulation investigation using the story The Snowman's Coat. The clip relating to the snowman stars at 07:48 and introduces concepts on insulation for children to discuss and investigate.
Could also use ice-eggs laid my a giant bird or ice-hands to create a buzz when investigating this idea.
SATIS 8-14: Yellow Box Book 5
Combine science and D&T in a project on Ice cream. Children sample different ice cream then design and make their own version. Challenge children to find the best insulating material to stop their ice cream melting.
This resource fits in well with the science topics about keeping warm and changing state but could also be adapted for work with younger children.
Further work on reading graphs of ice cream sales could be done in science and maths and cross-curricluar work on advertising their product could be done in Literacy.
Interactive Teaching Programs 5
This includes an interactive thermometer which is a great way of teaching how to read temperatures on different scales.Use on your interactive whiteboard to help children at the start of a lesson learning to read thermometers to take the temperature of different things.
Changing State
BBC schools science clip on heating and cooling water which can be used as a starter when teaching changing state. There is also a quiz which children could do independently at the end of the topic.
