Representing 3D Shapes
This list contains links all about isometric drawing and plans and elevations. It is suitable for all of KS3 as the work can easily be differentiated. I would suggest using the list in the order given as I put a short activity first as a starter suggestion and a good fun review activity last as a plenary suggestion. The careers link can be used wherever you feel appropriate when teaching this unit of work. There is lots to explore in the careers link, so you could have different careers in each lesson of this unit. I would suggest 3 hours to teach this unit and use a pick and mix approach to these links as some go over the same learning outcomes, but in a different way, so you wouldn't need to use all of them.
Shape, Space and Measures 3
Use the file containing the pupil workbook and use Unit 2 on isometric drawing. This resource introduces isometric drawing by getting pupils to contrust a straw model of a cube, dangle it from a piece of string and observe the different shadows it casts. From the shadows pupils are introduced to the idea of isometric representation at an oblique angle. The teacher support/assessment file has; p14 revision sheet; p23 extension sheet; p47 diagnostic question sheet and how to use it; p55 KS3/4 test questions & answers; p59 & 65 an open ended activity on making a 3D jigsaw puzzle using multilink, and a levelling sheet and pupil assessment sheet.
Representing 3D Shapes SS6
This resource challenges pupils to match up perspective cards with corresponding isometric drawing cards, with corresponding elevation cards. There is also the opportunity to build the shapes using multilink and use of a shape building computer programme to help pupils visualise the shapes better.
Architect's Skills
This resource has 3 different activities all on plans and elevations. The tasks are presented in context - the skills that an architect would need. Pupils have to build shapes using multilink from a description only, given by their partner. Pupils have to work out how to write in code plan and elevations for their shape and finally pupils have to decode and work out what a mystery shape is.
STEM Choices: a Resource Pack
This resource is not an activity for the pupils to do. It is an opportunity for the pupils to learn about the different careers that use 3D shape skills that they have just been learning about. Choose and use the file about the architect.
