Water
This is a sequence of six lessons that is intended for triple Science students.
1. Hard Water
2. Testing for Hardness (Practical)
3. The reaction of carbon dioxide with water.
4. Structured Worksheet on Hard Water
Water
This resource has several lessons for a wide range of abilities. There are several extension activities which will suit more able classes. Although this resource may seem somewhat dated, it does cover many of the requirements for the Triple Science specification.
Option 1: Water
This resource, although, dated has lot useful information on the whole topic of water. There are several practical that are on all GCSE specifications. Water is on the syllabus of AQA and Edexcel Triple Science Chemistry.
Does tap water contain dissolved solids
This is a class practical and teacher demonstration. If there is sufficient apparatus, students could do the three evaporations in parallel. Alternatively, the three types of water could be distributed round the class and the results compared at the end. It takes quite a long time for the water in a beaker to boil, so this should be built into the planning.
Hard Water
This resources discusses the advantages and disadvanatges of hard water. The work sheet also includes a graph plotting exercise.. This resource is an ideal introduction to water for classes of all abilities.
Testing for Hardness
This is a student practical, where a lot of the preparation work has been done beforehand. It could be varied so that the students watched, or carried out themselves, the preparation of the solutions. This would require using real (or simulated) sea water, rather than mixing temporarily and permanently hard water. Also the temporarily hard water will really need to be boiled and cooled (as opposed to distilled water being substituted).
Structured Work Sheet on Hard Water
This is an excellent resource. This structured worksheet fulfills the GCSE specification requirements for both Edexcel and AQA. All answers to the questions are in the notes. This work sheet can be used as a Homework exercise.
