Computing Systems And Networks - Sharing Information

In this unit, Year 5 pupils will develop their understanding of computer systems and how information is transferred between systems and devices. Pupils will have the opportunities to consider both small-scale and large scale-systems and explain the input, output and process aspects of a variety of real-world systems. Pupils will learn to work as part of a collaborative online group with other class members in order to develop skills of working together through a digital device. This unit provided by the National Centre for Computing Education covers key areas of the Upper Key Stage 2 computing curriculum;

  • Use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.
  • Understand computer networks including the internet; how they can provide multiple services such as the world wide web; and the opportunities they offer for communication and collaboration,
  • Work with variables and various forms of input and output,
  • Select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that accomplish given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information.

Lesson 1 - Systems

In this session, pupils are introduced to the concept of a system, developing their understanding of components working together to make a whole. Pupils will explore how digital systems work and the physical and electronic connections that exist. The activities support pupils to describe a computer system as...

Lesson 2 - Computer Systems And Us

In this session, pupils will consider how larger computer systems work and how devices and processes are connected. Pupils will also have the opportunity to discuss and reflect upon how computer systems help us in our daily lives. Through the activities pupils will be supported to identify tasks that are managed by...

Lesson 3 - Transferring Information

In this session pupils will be introduced to the idea that parts of a computer are not always in the same place or country, that a system must transfer information using the internet. This session builds on the previous Year 4 unit ‘What is the Internet?’, developing awareness of IP addresses and the protocols that...

Lesson 4 - Working Together

In this session, pupils will start a collaborative online project in order to discover ways people can work together from separate locations. The resources will support pupils to recognise that connected digital devices can allow people to access shared files stored online and how to safely send information over...
