Maths Chest 6
Maths Chest 6 is the sixth of a developmental scheme published in the late 1980s, suitable for use at Key Stage Two. The aims of the scheme were to provide concrete activities to allow secure formation of concepts and develop understanding. The scheme was written with the firm belief that children should enjoy mathematics therefore includes many games and investigations designed to motivate and encourage self-confidence in learners.
It is organised into four topic areas: number, pictorial representation, measure and shape and space. Each topic area is revisited several times and incorporates relevant practical work so progress may be built upon gradually. Other resources include a textbook, introduction to Maths Chest 6, repromasters, answer sheets and a glossary. Repromasters are
photocopiable sheets which are used to record and present work or provide the basis for playing a game or activity. They also include a set of progress charts covering all the topics.
Teaching of each topic is organised into teacher-led activities and group activities. Following these activities, children work independently on the relevant textbook pages or in small groups practising the concepts taught.
Opportunities are given for enrichment and reinforcement together with suggestions for cross-curricular links and investigations.
Each of the topic areas contains detailed teachers' notes on how to carry out the activities and provides extra activity choices so topics may be presented in a different way to clarify concepts or to provide extension work.
This resource contains an Introduction to Maths Chest 6 detailing its aims and how it was designed to be used. It also includes teaching materials needed to deliver it successfully. The scheme is organised into the following topic areas:
