National Learning Network Materials: Biology

This selection of NLN Materials for Biology are small, flexible 'bite-sized' episodes of learning, and were developed though funding from the Skills Funding Agency.

The materials adopt a range of approaches involving some knowledge acquisition, a chance to practice and absorb, and some form of assessment to check that the learning has been understood and the learning outcome(s) achieved.

Many of the materials include games or quizzes. Accessibility options are available on many of the materials to suit learners' individual needs. The materials are also designed to appeal to the different learning styles of students.

The materials were created in partnership with subject matter experts and a wide range of colleges and adult and community learning experts. All the materials have been trialled by tutors and students and tested for accessibility at the Royal National College of the Blind in Hereford.

Resources

Enzyme Action

This unit of learning material, from the National Learning Network Materials' Biology collection, explains enzymes and enzyme action. Animations illustrate the lock and key model of enzyme action. Students see how temperature and pH influence the enzyme's active site and therefore the rate of reaction.   The files...

Cells, Tissues and Organs

This unit of material is from the National Leaning Network Materials' Biology collection. Interactives and animations explore cell structure, specialisation and functions. Students also look at different tissues and see how they can be organised into organs. The files to install this application on your own...

Cells of Animals, Plants and Bacteria

This interactive resource, from the National Learning Network Materials' Biology collection, begins by looking at the workings of light and electron microscopes. Through illustrations and quizzes, students investigate the structure and function of animal, plant and bacterial cells. The files to install this...

Nervous System: Action Potentials

From the National Learning Network Materials' Biology collection. This interactive resource shows how nerve signals, or action potentials, are transmitted along a nerve cell. Students see the cell's resting potential and how an action potential is generated and propogated along a nerve cell. The files to...
