Maintaining Curiosity: a Survey into Science Education in Schools

This report, published by Ofsted in November 2013, sets out the findings of a new survey of science in 91 primary and 89 secondary schools, which was carried out between 2010 and 2013 and aims to support schools in implementing the new National Curriculum.

It is recognised that the best science teachers set out to 'first maintain curiosity' in their students and this report looks at how effective schools are at doing this. It addresses overall effectiveness, achievement, quality of teaching and the curriculum, and leadership and management at primary and secondary levels. It then goes on to describe factors promoting achievement including evaluation, differentiation, assessment and how to make science interesting.

The report highlights the importance of teaching science for understanding. For students to achieve well in science, they must not only acquire the necessary knowledge, but also understand its value, enjoy the experience of working scientifically, and sustain their interest in learning it.
