The Cartesian Diver

Produced by Teachers TV, and part of the Great Lesson Starters series, this video shows how a secondary physics teacher uses role play to liven-up her lesson on radiation.

She starts by asking her students to consider how a smoke alarm might work before getting them to all take part in a modelling exercise that looks at the flow of alpha particles in the alarm.

Finally she uses a Geiger-Muller counter to demonstrate the safe levels of radiation in a smoke alarm.
