Gene Therapy: the Facts

From Nowgen, and produced with support from the Wellcome Trust, this video interview sees Caitlin, a cystic fibrosis sufferer, quizzing Dr. Kevin Southern. He is a Paediatric Respiratory Consultant working at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool. His answers shed light on gene therapy and also future treatments of cystic fibrosis (CF). Some of the questions Caitlin poses are:

* How close is gene therapy to being a cure for cystic fibrosis?

* What would gene therapy for CF be like and how often would it need to be taken?

* Are there any risks involved in gene therapy?

* What symptoms of CF would gene therapy stop?

* If gene therapy is not successful, what could be other future treatments for CF?

* What clinical trials have there been with gene therapy?

* What may future research be into gene therapy and where will the funding come from?
