Nuffield Advanced Biology: Maintenance of the Organism - a Laboratory Guide

Published by the Nuffield Foundation, the purpose of this Nuffield Advanced Biology Laboratory Guide was to provide a coherent treatment of a series of biological topics, based on laboratory investigations. The approach throughout was centered on enquiry as opposed to the mere verification of facts. Students were expected to gain not only knowledge but also an understanding of the processes by which biological knowledge is acquired. Observation, the designing of investigations, working out ideas and hypotheses on which to base experiments, analysing results, and drawing relevant conclusions played a fundamental role in the work.
