The Avenue Reclamation Project

The Avenue is a former industrial site in Chesterfield. It manufactured coke from coal and during this process the site was heavily contaminated with hydrocarbon waste. The project describes how, in 2011, the site was in the process of being decontaminated so the land can be re-used. The activities in this collection consider some of the processes and the science behind them.

The resources in this collection look at:
* Measuring air quality
* Soil decontamination by bioremediation and thermal treatment
* Combustion and burning fossil fuels
* Treating contaminated water

As well as describing the activities at the Avenue, a range of practical activities model these activities in the classroom.

A supporting web site contains further activities that support specifications in the humanities subjects. These can be linked to develop a cross-curricular approach to the activities. The web site can be found at: www.theavenueeducation.co.uk

Resources

Burning Fossil Fuels

These activities look at what happens when fossil fuels burn. The activities include a demonstration of burning fuels with a paper-based student activity to look at the breaking and formation of bonds during combustion. The activities can be used to look at fossil fuels, exothermic and endothermic reactions,...

Ecological Survey

Using the context of land remediation, this resource describes a series of investigations to measure the distribution of plants and animals, including a range of sampling techniques and the measurement of abiotic factors such as soil conditions, temperature and light intensity.  These activities are generally...

Monitoring Air Quality

These resources, from Innovate Educate and The Avenue, are linked with a web site that describes the reclamation of a former coke-manufacturing plant in Chesterfield. Remediation work at the site has the potential to produce dust and release particulates into the air. This activity challenges students to view and...

Risk Assessment

These resources, from Innovate Educate and The Avenue, are linked with a web site that describes the reclamation of a former coke-manufacturing plant in Chesterfield. There are a range of activities undertaken on the site and this provides an excellent context to allow students to look at risk assessments.
