Beginner and Advanced Package for Geographic Information Systems GIS03 / YA02
Summary
What do the NHS, Pixar animation studios, Tesco, and the Unity computer game engine all have in common?
They all use GIS technology to make things work!
Tools that capture, visualize, analyse and communicate about spatial data now quietly underpin our modern world. No longer just for geographers, this technology spans STEM subjects, humanities and the arts. This course empowers you to build GIS apps that you and your students use to ask and answer your own questions. You’ll get hands on with the ArcGIS system and build data capture forms, a range of maps, dashboards and 3D models that will bring your curriculum to life.
Who is it for?
The first day of this course is aimed at teachers from KS2 – 5 looking to introduce GIS technology into their lessons and teach students key skills.
The second day of this course is aimed at teachers from KS2 – 5 who have some prior experience using the technology. You’ll want to go beyond the basics of using ready-resources and start building your own bespoke materials.
What topics are covered?
Day 1:
Introduction to GIS – an overview of what GIS is and how it’s used in a wide range of real world contexts.
2D Data Visualisation – explore dynamic maps and charts to understand how interactive data helps us to better identify and solve problems
Digital Twins – dive into the world of 3D models that let us simulate and experiment to more fully understand our planet and its systems
Data capture – find out more about how visualisations and models are built, and take the opportunity to collect and process some data first hand.
Day 2:
The World of GIS – inspiring case studies of GIS from a wide range of real world contexts.
2D Data Visualisation – build dynamic maps and charts to understand how interactive data helps us to better identify and solve problems
Digital Twins – create 3D models that let us simulate and experiment to more fully understand our planet and its systems
Data capture – build your own data capture form to enable you and your students to collect and process spatial data.
