Summary

The ‘new to computing’ pathway provides subject knowledge enhancement for new to computing teachers, up to and including GCSE Computer Science. Whether you’ve recently qualified as a computing specialist teacher; or if you’re looking to add computing as a second specialism this CPD will guide you through a supported introduction to computer science.

This CPD package will provide you the opportunity to develop your GCSE Computer Science knowledge leading towards recognised certification. You'll be supported along the way by experienced teaching professionals, among a group of your peers. You'll participate in live face to face CPD and mentored online CPD on-demand.

By engaging with this CPD, you'll become confident in supporting students of computer science. You'll take-away ready-to-use and successful teaching approaches from experienced teachers, supported by the latest research and evidence.

This CPD package includes two courses:

Residential information:

This is a residential course at the National STEM Learning Centre, York. Meals and overnight accommodation are included for participants for the duration of the course. Subsidies are also available for teachers from state-funded schools and colleges which can be used towards travel, supply cover, teaching equipment or further local CPD.

If wish to extend your stay in York, bed and breakfast will be available at the centre’s on-site accommodation at a discounted rate of £45+VAT per night. You can email reception@stem.org.uk to secure this rate, providing their course booking information and confirming the night(s) they would like to stay.

Who is it for?

This pathway is intended for teachers who are new to computing, wanting to learn more about the knowledge required to deliver the computing curriculum. No prior knowledge is required to attend this CPD.

How will you learn?

Hands-on experiential learning with the collaborative support of your peers. Expert advice and instruction on the GCSE curriculum and the expectations of a computer science teacher, from experienced classroom practitioners.

How long is this course?

You’ll complete two courses from the Key stage 3 and GCSE Computer Science programme, totalling approximately 12 hours, split across two days. 

Online courses are also available free of charge, these are available to complete before, alongside or after the face to face courses. 

Who is the course leader?

Outcomes

By the end of this CPD residential you will be able to:

Introduction to computer systems, networking and security in computer science:

  • learn how data is inputted into a computer, how it is processed, stored and output in a useful form

  • develop a basic understanding of local and global computer networks

  • become knowledgeable and confident in using common cybersecurity term

Introduction to algorithms, programming and data in computer science:

  • learn about algorithms, how they are usually represented, and some of their most common applications

  • understand how human-language algorithms are translated through computer programs into binary, to be executed by a computer

  • recognise and use the basic building blocks of programming: sequence, selection and repetition

  • understand how binary, denary and hexadecimal are used to represent numbers, and why this is important for computer science
