Episode 118: Potential Dividers

Produced by the Institute of Physics, this student experiment introduces the use of a potential divider as a source of variable potential difference. Students also learn to use potential dividers to detect temperature or light levels.

Activities include:
• how a potential divider works
• calculating the voltage across potential divider resistors
• the effect of load on output
• using a potential divider (fixed resistor, variable resistor and potentiometer)
• building a temperature sensor or light meter circuit
• student questions with solutions provided
