Forces - Mass, Weight and Gravity
In this resource from Teachers TV, Year Six teacher Zoe Lowe teaches a lesson on the difficult concepts of mass, weight and gravity. She uses balls to represent the Earth and Moon, and a soft toy, Astrobear, to visually show and aid understanding of the concept of gravity. Through a paired talk exercise, the students begin to understand that gravity is a force. She highlights the common and scientific usages of the word weight, using the visual aids, and illustrates how gravitational pull affects weight.
Children are asked to provide the key vocabulary for the lesson, from their learning so far, a technique used to aid listening skills and understanding of key vocabulary.
The children then measure the force and weight of objects using newton meters. This helps them to distinguish between the terms weight as a force and mass. They have to choose the correct newton meters for each object as they all have different scales.
