Key Stage Three Case Studies

Helping students understand the relationship between technology and society is an important part of design and technology education. Nuffield Design and Technology does this through case studies.

These are true stories about design and technology in the world outside school. By reading them, students find out more than they possibly could through designing and making along. Through case studies, they learn about the way firms and businesses design and manufacture goods and how those goods are marketed and sold. They also learn about the impact that products have on the people who use them and the places where they are made. This type of activity coupled with appropriate resource tasks are particularly useful for considering areas of study such as products and applications, quality, and health and safety.

This series of case studies for students aged 11-14 comprises: Taking cover, Carrying, Food across the world, Pop Tarts, Smart cards, Weighing and Product life cycle analysis, Making jewellery, On display, Netting, Soup, beautiful soup, Hidden killers, Furbys and Interior design.
