Decorating biscuits

Designed to be accessible for all primary aged children, this activity guides you and your pupils through the simple steps to explore maths with gingerbread men. This could be carried out as part of a design and technology, computing (coding) or maths lesson, and is simple to follow, making it suitable for learning at home and in class. Mapped to the UK curricula, this resource is designed in the theme of ‘celebration’ allowing children to have fun, whilst applying their maths and design and technology skills. Explore maths with gingerbread men, and find out how many combinations of buttons are possibilities. This activity encourages pupils to ‘find all the possibilities’. It encourages children to work systematically to ensure they know when all the solutions have been found, as well as ensuring they haven’t made any two gingerbread men look exactly the same. This activity provides a range of strategies to encourage independence and systematic problem solving, for example one strategy that will be promoted is the idea of fixing one of the variables, in this case one of the buttons, whilst changing the others in turn.
