Times table cake challenge
Designed to be accessible for key stage two children, this activity guides you and your pupils through a range of fun and engaging maths challenges, using either real cupcakes or printable paper cakes. This could be carried out as part of a design and technology or maths lesson, and is simple to follow, making it suitable for learning at home and in class. Mapped to the UK curricula, this resource is designed in the theme of ‘celebration’ allowing children to have fun, whilst applying their maths and design and technology skills. Get them thinking about number and colour combinations, as well as plenty of opportunity to apply their key stage two times tables with this visual and hands-on activity. This activity could be used in any key stage two class, as a stand-alone activity, as a focused task to develop problem solving skills, or as a consolidation task related to 3x, 4x, 8x multiplication facts. In this activity, pupils develop both their problem-solving and reasoning skills. They will also practice their mental recall of the 3x, 4x and 8x multiplication tables without the standard ‘fill out the multiplication table’.
