CPD taster - Effective transition between year 6 and year 7 in science

This is a CPD taster created to give teachers a better understanding of what to expect when joining one of our science leadership courses. Below you will find a video and a task for you to do in your own time. Once you have done the activity, book on to Effective Transition between Year 6 and Year 7 in Science (RX028).

All pupils must make the transition from Year 6 to Year 7, but how can you best support your pupils during this time? In 2015, Ofsted published their "Key Stage 3: the wasted years?" report, which suggested that, in many schools, the transition from primary to secondary is poorly handled. In this video, Tanya Shields, Primary STEM Lead, explains more. There is then a short task that gives a sample of the types of activities you will be guided through on this CPD course.

Task

The purpose of this task is to give you some familiarity with the recommendations from the Ofsted Key Stage 3: the wasted years? report and to think about your school in relation to them.

  1. Download the Key Stage 3: the wasted years? report.
  2. Read the recommendations on page 8.
  3. Think about your answers to the following questions:
    1. What are your schools strengths and areas for development in relation to these recommendations?
    2. What concerns you most about transition and the impact on pupils learning within your school? This could be in relation to a particular recommendation, or something else entirely.

Over the course of this CPD we will provide you with resources that will help you answer these questions and aid you in developing clear and effective transition practices from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3.

Next steps

Our Effective Transition between Year 6 and Year 7 in science CPD course explores the challenges with transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3, and how this can be improved. You will be encouraged to reflect on your own transition practices as Year 6 and Year 7 teachers, and consider more effective strategies to support pupils’ progress.

Book your place on Effective transition between year 6 and year 7 in science (RX028).
