This textbook is written to explain computing from first principles, and appeals to a broad audience beyond many computing texts. With clear and concise explanation, useful diagrams and a structure that builds on previous understanding, it is aimed at post-16 students but sections would be equally useful at all levels of secondary education. Thought-provoking ‘explorations’ extend computational thinking, and ensure in-depth understanding.

Topics covered include:

  • Computing basics and data representation
  • Language structures, linking human and computer languages
  • The reasons for, and nature of, structured programming languages
  • Problem solving and algorithmic thinking
  • Logic
  • Popular algorithms and measures of algorithmic complexity
  • Objects
  • Interpreted language
  • Computability
