In its original French version, this book has been widely regarded as one of the outstanding accounts of the history of mathematics from primitive times until the beginning of the nineteenth century.

Volume 1 begins with a general bird's-eye view of mathematical history, and then, following a brief look at the mathematics of the Egyptians and Babylonians, there ia a detailed discussion of Greek mathematics and particular of the work of Euclid, Archimedes, and Apollonius.
