Cheops mission video
With the aid of animations, ESA’s CHEOPS (CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite) is introduced.
The video shows how the European space telescope is being used to determine the main characteristics of known extrasolar planets. Launched in Dec. 2019 it is ESA’s first mission in the Cosmic Vision science programme dedicated to studying bright nearby stars. Using high precision observations it looks at the affect of a planet's size as it passes in the super earth-Neptune range, and how this data then enables scientists to calculate the bulk density. It also collects information about the giant gassy planets regarding their atmospheric composition which plays a crucial role in the understanding of the formation and evolution of our planets.
