Ice cream: pie charts

This task assesses understanding of pie charts and working on a problem in a real life situation.

The task involves making a plan for selling ice creams at a school sports day. Information is given on:

  • The cost of a tub of ice cream
  • The capacity of the tub
  • How many cones can be filled from each tub
  • The cost of a cone
  • The proposed selling price of a cone

Sixty people are surveyed to find out their preference between flavours of ice cream. The task is to work out what quantities of each flavour to buy, and work out an estimate of the profit.

This task is from the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service, a collaboration between UC Berkeley and the Shell Centre team at the University of Nottingham. A full rubric is given for the task, together with examples of student work and suggestions for helping students overcome misconceptions. Further information on the collection is given here.
