Day out: school trip planning

This task looks at planning a school trip. Information is given about three places to visit, including the cost and distance from school. A class vote takes place with students listing their first and second choice of which place they would like to visit. Additional information gives the cost per mile of hiring a bus, the fact that teachers go free, and that each student will be charged the same amount. Based on all of this information, the task is to decide which place the school trip should visit, and how much each student should be charged.

Examples are given of student work to enable peer assessment to take place, together with examination of different approaches.

This task is from the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service, a collaboration between UC Berkeley and the Shell Centre team at the University of Nottingham. A full rubric is given for the task, together with examples of student work and suggestions for helping students overcome misconceptions. Further information on the collection is given here.
