Classifying solutions to systems of equations
The first activity in this resource asks students to consider x = 5 and answer the question ‘what value is y’? An initial discussion builds up understanding of graphical representations of linear equations.
This lesson develops solving pairs of linear equations by considering their graphical representations. This is achieved through identifying a linear equation from a given table of values and also completing a table of values.
There is a matching exercise where each equation must be matched with a table of values and a graphical representation. The final task is to find common points on pairs of graphs.
The lesson assumes familiarity with substitution and drawing graphs.
This is a concept development lesson from the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service, a collaboration between UC Berkeley and the Shell Centre team at the University of Nottingham. Further information on the collection is given here.
