Cross Bear!

This problem is an interesting variation on ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. All three bears start eating their porridge at the same time but at different rates. The time is given for Daddy Bear to finish, then the time that Mummy bear’s dish is emptied, and then finally the time it takes to empty Baby Bear’s bowl. Each bowl is the same size and the challenge is to work out how long it would take Baby Bear to finish a bowl of porridge unaided.

There are several numerical examples that can be shared amongst the class. Tabulating the results reveals that the time taken by Baby Bear is always 10 times the last time interval.

Finding the result involves adding fractions with different denominators and reciprocals.
