Addition and Subtraction: Year Five

This series of seventeen interactive excel sheets, aimed at students in Year Five, look at a variety of addition and subtraction questions.

The first sheet helps to demonstrate the count up method for subtraction. Each line of the solution can be revealed at the click of a button. A new example can be generated each time.

The second sheet selects a random number from a 100 grid and asks students to select the value that needs to be added to make 100. Answers can be checked by clicking on the smiley face and new examples can be generated.

In the third sheet students are given one value and a target number and have to select the correct multiple of 10 to complete the sum. The next two sheets repeat this process for addition with multiples of 50 and 100.

On the sixth sheet students have to select two numbers that will make either 1 or 10 when added to together. In the next sheet students are to select the answer when two numbers of a similar value are added together.

The following sheet contains a set of five decimal subtraction questions. Students have to select the correct values to complete each statement.

The next sheet contains a set of four questions in which the solution of the addition or subtraction question crosses over a multiple of 1000. The correct answer can be selected from twenty five different options and hints can be revealed with the click of a button.

In the tenth sheet students are given an addition statement and have to select the correct answer to fill the gap in a similar, related statement.

The following sheet shows a step by step guide to addition with four digit numbers. Each stage of the calculation can be revealed one step at a time. New examples can be generated at the click of a button.

The next two sheets show addition by the compensation method and written addition with carrying. Once again steps can be revealed one at a time and new examples can be generated.

The next three sheets concentrate of subtraction methods. The first sheet looks at the method of counting up; the second by compensation and the third subtraction by the decomposition method.

The final sheet contains mixed questions on addition and subtraction. The solutions and new questions can be revealed by the click of a button.

Note:

This program was designed to be viewed on a screen with a resolution of 1024 x 768. Users may have to adjust the resolution of their screen for the pages to display as was originally intended. The program uses macros which need to be enabled on the users' machine.
