Classroom Activities for the Busy Teacher: NXT

This sample of a teacher guide introduces basic robotics using Lego NXT hardware and software The general nature as well as the origins of robotics are covered. NXT robots are then introduced, as well as some basic mathematical and other considerations for using robots in the classroom. The importance and impact of battery power, wheel size and other factors are discussed. Introductory activities then lead the students through basic movement commands, using flowcharts to provide support. Some ideas for further teaching content and challenges are featured, and student worksheets linked to the sample activities are also provided. For programming of Lego NXT, Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0 software is required. This is available as a free home download, or a site license is required for use in schools. Also required are the programmable brick and a selection of sensors, as found in Lego NXT Education packs, as well as building bricks specified in the building instructions.
