Brompton Bicycle: Systems and Control Cycle Route

In this set of six lessons, students are briefed to design, make and evaluate a product suitable for use with a Brompton bicycle. The activities are presented in the context of a real company and include challenges that reflect the textiles technology strand of the design and technology curriculum.

  • Lesson 1: Students investigate what is different about the Brompton compared to other bicycles.They also look at the philosophy behind the folding bike concept, product accessories and write a specification using a mood board and product research.
  • Lesson 2: Students use peer assessment with their research, test design solutions and evaluation of ideas against specifications, develop their designs through modelling and use this experience to draft a final design drawing.
  • Lesson 3: Students use self-target setting and evaluation techniques to plan how they are going to make their product, use modelling options to develop their designs and use a Gantt chart to help with planning.
  • Lesson 4: Students discuss design issues such as form versus function, identify a problem with their design and make improvements to their modelling skills through teacher demonstrations. This may lead to developments in their designs and progress with any making tasks.
  • Lesson 5: Students develop their making and modelling skills.
  • Lesson 6: Students learn how to evaluate their own as well as someone else’s work. They reflect on their work, modifying their design to improve it. 

The resource, produced by Brompton Bicycle, includes teachers' notes, an activity booklet for students and presentations outlining the tasks.
