Moving From Grid to a Column Method

This clip is the fourth of a suite of videos which look at progression in multiplication at primary level. It follows Debbie, in Upper Key Stage Two, as she introduces the children to the column method for multiplication.

Children start by carrying out a calculation using the grid method. Debbie then demonstrates the more compact column method for the calculation and asks the children to spot the similarities between the two methods, finding out how the numbers in the column are related to those in the grid. Children then carry out a calculation using the new method and check it using the grid method.

Debbie discusses the importance of children knowing where the numbers in the column have come from and how the grid method helps support this transition.
