Education Pack: Senses

These materials aimed at primary learners explore how our senses can help us to learn about the natural environment. Linked to the topic areas of animals and habitats, they are designed for use when visiting a wildlife area. Most of the activities focus on one sense and ask children about how they would describe the things they have smelt, felt, seen and heard. The activities are:

Adjective bank- collect adjectives for things children experience and record them on voice recorders or on paper.

Sense scavenger hunt- collect natural objects to match to adjectives

Sound map- produce a diagram of the sounds around you

Bat sense- game finding out what it is like to be a bat and use echolocation

Scents-create a perfume from natural things found on the site

Meet a tree- describe a tree whilst blindfolded

I am a camera- observe the area and make drawings

Colour matching- find natural materials which match to the colour of paint charts

The notes contain instructions on running the activities and a checklist of equipment required. This resource has been produced by OPAL (Open Air Laboratories).
