Heather Distribution

This field study provides the opportunity for students to use ecological survey techniques and conduct investigations to understand how the environmental (abiotic) conditions in a habitat can affect the presence and distribution of organisms. The resource provides a practical investigation of the relationship between soil abiotic factors and heather species distribution using a combination of in-field measurement, laboratory analyses and computer-based data presentation and analysis.

The first PowerPoint presentation introduces students to the heathland habitat and the second provides an introduction to the field and laboratory study. The student workbooks give instructions and questions for students to work through. For greater ease the workbook is divided into three sections: 1) in-field, 2) laboratory, and 3) data analysis and interpretation.
Information on the key characteristics of the three main heather species is also provided for use when the heather is not in flower.
