Designing APP Assessment for Maths

This resource from Teachers TV features Tom Pole, Head of Mathematics at Plantsbrook School, who has redesigned the Key Stage Three curriculum to deliver Assessment for Pupil Progress.

Rich tasks allow students to choose their own path to investigate problems and the movement of a ball on a pool table provides opportunities for students to discuss their ideas with each other and demonstrate their knowledge of angles and algebra.

A similar approach is developed for homework, which again allows students to develop their mathematical thinking skills. Peer assessment is utilised as a further means to encourage independent learning.

Tom uses personally designed assessment diagrams to record observations made during the lessons and, within the department, assessment is standardised through moderation.
