Algebra on the Planet Zog!

Produced by the Maths Magic project, Algebra on the Planet Zog! provides teacher inspiration for ‘clock’ or modulo arithmetic. Describing addition modulo six, students are asked to complete an addition table. There then follows a number of rich, searching questions asking students to extend their knowledge resulting in an explanation of how subtraction modulo six can be carried out. Multiplication modulo six is explored with extension to division. The activity concludes by asking students to solve a variety of equations modulo six. The task contains a number of extension ideas such as considering square roots and the effect this has when solving quadratic equations modulo six.
