Sets, Mappings, Relations and Operations

The Midland Mathematical Experiment, in which a number of schools collaborated with the aim of developing a new approach to teaching mathematics in the Grammar School, developed a series of books to cover their ‘A’-level syllabus. Sets, Mappings, Relations and Operations is split into sections, each section containing explanations, examples and exercises. Sets considers elements, subsets, equivalent sets, denumerable sets, closed and open sets, operations within sets, truth tables and set algebra. Mappings discusses the concept of mapping, surjective mapping, injective mapping, bijective mapping, matrix representation of mappings, product mappings and fixed points of a mapping. Relations looks at relations within sets, properties of relations and networks. Operations looks at operations within sets, the uses of operations and some useful notes and theorems. The book concludes with a section containing answers to the exercises.
