Integrated Science Book 3
Integrated Science, from the Wreake Valley Academy, is a series of three books designed to support science teaching of students aged 11 to 14. They provided a balanced science curriculum that included biology, chemistry, physics and encouraged scientific investigation as a way of promoting scientific thinking and engagement in science.
Book 3 was for use with students in the third year of secondary education (now referred to as year nine). Each section of the book had extension work for the more able students. The chapters in the book cover the following areas of science:
1. Let there be light: light and shadows, reflection, refraction, telescope, magnifying glass, spectrum.
2. And there was light: prisms, focal point, inverted image, real and virtual images.
3. Camera and eye: pinhole camera, lens camera, structure of the eye, protection of the eye, binocular vision, judging distance and balance.
4. Forces: what is a force, magnetic force, electrical force, friction, spinning, elastic forces, gravity, balanced and unbalanced forces, pressure.
5. To the moon: gravity and the Earth, rockets and ‘lift off’, weightless in space, mass and weight on the Moon and Earth.
6. Making things work: motors and engines, humans as engines, fuel needed, force, work, effort, pulleys, electric motors.
7. Movement: forces and movement, acceleration, deceleration, balanced forces, falling objects, measuring motion, acceleration graphs, collisions.
8 . Breaking up is hard to do: thermal decomposition, testing gases given as products of reactions, word equations for decomposition reactions, different kinds of reactions, reduction.
9. Atoms: particles, atoms, elements, compounds, mixtures.
10. Elementary my dear compound: making compounds, change of properties, word equations, carbon dioxide, flame tests, differences between metals and non-metals.
11. Reactivity: reactions with water, chemical symbols, comparing reactivity, making metal compounds, reactions of metals with acids, making metals from compounds.
12. Rates of reaction: factors affecting rates of reaction, heat, concentration, catalysts.
13. Get a move on: evaporation, particle explanation of changes of state, melting points, bonding between atoms in compounds, electrolysis.
14. Merging molecules: giant molecular structures, changing properties through heating, making nylon, polymers, Perspex, catalysis, proteins, cracking oil.
15. Grub, guts and spit: food tests, food types, digestion, absorption, diffusion, pH and enzyme activity.
