Listening to a Locust Brain
Produced by the Royal Institution, this short video illustrates how the nervous signals generated when a locust detects movement, can be shown.
The clip shows a locust which is immobilised to enable the nerve signals passing down its visual neuron to be detected. These signals are amplified and converted into sound. This produces a clear demonstration of how the locust's nervous system produces nerve impulses when its eye detects movement.
At the end of the clip, the locust is released to show that it has not come to any harm.
