London Underground

This Core Maths task requires students to investigate the number of steps and various dimensions of escalators.

Students can measure width and length of stairs in their own school/college and compare them to their estimate of escalator steps. It may be appropriate to make use of Pythagoras' Theorem in the calculations. They are encouraged to carry out research on the internet.

The activity sheet shows a picture and a diagram of an escalator with no dimensions shown. Students are required to estimate how many steps are needed in one escalator length and state any assumptions and estimates.

The resource also includes links to You Tube clips about the construction of Cross Rail in London, including the Platforms and Plague Pits video. The resource also includes teacher notes and suggestions for extensions activities.
