Colour

This is one of the 14 Background Books published for Stage III of the Nuffield Chemistry Sample Scheme. The books were highly illustrated and designed to be attractive. This book describes developments in the applications of chemistry but takes an historical approach in some sections.

There are two parts to this book:
*Part 1: The nature of colour
The eye, the electromagnetic spectrum, flame colours, chromatography and an experiment to show that bees can see blue.

*Part 2: Paints and dyes
Sources of natural and synthetic dyes and pigments, Perkin’s discovery of mauveine, colour printing, the discovery of monastral blue.

This book was published in 1969 and the picture of Twiggy does not look fashionable today. There is, of course, no mention of digital images or ink-jet printers but, bearing in mind the historical context, this is a book that is still worth reading.
