Atoms into Ions

This is one of the 14 Background Books published for Stage III of the Nuffield Chemistry Sample Scheme. The books were highly illustrated and designed to be attractive. This book is an account of concepts related to oxidation and reduction,.

There are three parts to this book:

*Part 1:The theory of oxidation
Oxidation in terms of electron transfer for ionic compounds and extended to cover polar covalent examples.

*Part 2: Oxidizing and reducing strength
Electric cells and oxidation potentials

*Part 3: The use of electrolytic oxidation and reduction
Uses include electroplating, the production of chlorine and fluorine, anodising aluminium, the production of hydrogen peroxide and the development of fuel cells.

This book was published in 1970 when UK teachers still used names such as ‘permanganate’. Today the ideas covered feature in post-16, advanced courses and are described in terms of oxidation numbers and electrode potentials.
