Learning at Home week 3: Classification
This list contains resources suitable for children learning at home. They link to the BBC Bitesize Daily Science programme for week 3 on classification.
Wildlife Watch *suitable for home learning*
Animal groups (ages 5-7)
This series of spotter sheets help children to identify and name a variety of common animals in their habitats. When you are out on a walk look out for common ‘minibeasts’ such as bees, butterflies, snails and spiders. You could take the spotter sheet with you to help children identify them, or maybe take a photograph and use the sheets later on at home. You can try the same activity with common birds that you may see outside or through your window.
Newly Discovered Species (Age 7 to 11)
Vertebrates and invertebrates (ages 7-9)
The PowerPoint presentation on helps support learning about the classification of animals. Look at slides 9-12. After this look at activity sheet A with 9 different animals. Write down some of the features of the different animals. Can you sort them into vertebrates and invertebrate animals? Can you sort them into any other groups and say how you have grouped them.
Education Pack: Seeds and Fruits - Adaptation *suitable for home learning*
Adaptation (ages 9-11)
The Bird beak activity in this resource helps show in a fun way how bird beak shape is really well adapted to the kind of food a bird eats. Use common household items to simulate beak shape and children can have a go at picking up different ‘foods’ with them. Bird food sources such as seeds, insects etc can be simulated using rice grains, mini-marshmallows or similar.
