Innovation Consultant
Alan Cucknell's job consists of finding new and innovative ways to make their clients' products stand out from the crowd. Alan's company works with clients on their business and technical challenges. He has worked on a wide range of products including designing lingerie, cars, swimsuits and even nappies. In one project, his team designed a swimsuit worn by world record-breaking swimmers. Alan says, "Maths and science A-levels were great preparation for my engineering degree. Design technology allowed me to creatively apply much of what I learnt in maths and physics. It kind of linked it all together.''
Snowboard Designer
Liza Brooks is a snowboard designer. Liza describes how her job involves looking at the science that goes into a snowboard. This involves how the rider moves on the slope, the board's materials and its construction. Understanding factors such as these help Liza to design a better snowboard.

Lee is a Graphic Designer at Northend Creative Print Solutions. He says "When I left university I applied for about 80 jobs. I got ten letters back, 70 no replies and I got about four or five interviews and I got a job... I'm happy doing what I'm doing. It's always what I've wanted".

"I've always liked doing things my own way so I'd always put a different angle on it or a different slant." Katie has worked at Pentland for 20 years. After a degree in fine art printed textiles, she set-up her own company before working for fashion brand Red or Dead. She moved to Pentland when they acquired Red or Dead and now works across the business.
Brompton design
Will Carleysmith, senior designer at Brompton Bicycle, describes how designers need an understanding of materials and manufacturing processes are essential in his role. He explains how mathematics and CAD are used in the design process, as well as rapid prototyping techniques.
Aerodynamicist
Steve analyses the flow of air over racing cars. He studied aero-mechanical engineering at university and following a two week summer placement, at Lola cars, he was offered a position in the company.
Product development engineer
This video presents Chris Bellamy who is a product engineer at Jaguar Land Rover. Chris describes the benefits of the company’s graduate scheme and his current role within a ‘body engineering’ team which designs all visible aspects in a vehicle. Chris talks about his early interests and why he decided to study maths, physics and applied sciences at university. He goes on to describe what he enjoys most at his job: the variety of tasks and responsibilities. Chris concludes that engineering plays an important role in designing and developing safe and sustainable products and having a degree in engineering offers exciting employment prospects.
