National Storytelling Week
Whether it's worded problems in maths, science poems, designing puppets to tell a story or a fairy-tale with an environmental meaning. Enjoy using these activities across the curriculum during National Storytelling Week.
Eco-Stories: Cinderella and Three Little Eco-pigs
Two stories which bring in ideas about environmental awareness and sustainability for younger children. Cinderella must go to the ball with the smallest carbon footprint whilst the Three Little Pigs build their houses thinking about how to minimise impact on the environment.
Badger Maths problem solving
A range of word-problems from Year One to Six on cards that may be laminated and re-used. Ideas on using equipment and acting out the story for younger children, drawing diagrams or picture stories and logical reasoning sheets to help older children. Great for lessons on word-problems or have them in a box for children to work on when they have finished other tasks.
The poetry of science
Write short poems to reinforce understanding of key science vocabulary or concepts. This could be used at the start of a lesson, for a plenary or at the end of a topic to assess the understanding of key ideas.
Will This Story Surprise You?
Combine Literacy and D&T by making a moving picture that tells a nursery rhyme or a simple story. This activity could be adapted for all primary age groups.
Problem-Solving Language
A Teachers TV programme showing how to to thelp children understand the language of word problems and find the mathematical calculation to find the answer.
How Should Your Puppets Tell Their Story?
Write a play script, design a stage and make puppets to tell a story. A great cross curricular project for storytelling week.
Primary technology - using stories from history
No matter what history topic you are studying: Ancient Greeks, Anglo-Saxons, Tudors or Victorians. Use these stories to lead into a D&T project.
