Equations
This list supports the following learning objectives
construct and solve linear equations with integer coefficients (unknown on either or both sides, without and with brackets) using appropriate methods (e.g. inverse operations, transforming both sides in same way)
Equations
The challenge of solving linear and quadratic equations is taken on by maths teacher Jonny Heeley and a group of Key Stage 3 students. This video goes from looking at linear equations with basic variables terms to work out the price of a bar of chocolate, to quadratic equations and working out the dimension of a flowerbed once you know the area
Value for Money: Mobile Phone Tariffs
Simple starter. Which is the best; 15p per minute or £10 per month plus 15p per minute. Could be used to form two equations and solve simultaneously.
Constructing and Solving Linear Equations
School packs on constructing and solving linear equations for Years Seven, Eight and Nine were developed by the National Strategies. They contained booklets which were part of continuining professional development courses.
The notes booklet contains sessions which:
- illustrate progression in teaching constructing and solving linear equations;
- guide teachers in collaborative planning of sequences of lessons addressing these and other supporting objectives;
- draw out the distinctive features of algebra in key stage 3
Algebra Makes Sense
This resource from SMILE contains twenty activities focusing on algebra. The activities address different aspects of algebra and are appropriate for a range of learning styles and abilities.
Algebra: Linear Equations
Algebra: linear equations covers fundamental algebraic skills such as substituting numbers in expressions, the use of function machines and solving simple linear equations.
The initial file forms part of the textbook. The activities sheet, extra exercises and mental tests compliment the work covered in the textbook. The overhead slides can be used on an interactive whiteboard.
