This collection of resources could be used as the basis of a three lesson sequence introducing hydrocarbons. Resources focus on where oil comes from, how it is refined and the different hydrocarbons produced along with some of their structures / isomers.

This article from catalyst magazine provided useful background research for students covering the oil refining process. I also covers the environmental impact of refineries.
Making Molecules
This excellent recourse provides a number of different activities all focused upon the structures of different hydrocarbons and their isomers. This could make a great cross curricular activity with a willing maths department.
