Green chlorine: a unit for 13-16 year olds

Produced by The Centre for Industry Education Collaboration (CIEC), these materials help students understand the underlying principles of electrolysis and how this process is used in the manufacture of chlorine from brine (salt solution). Students see how the technology has developed and changed the efficiency of the process.

Students also look at a risk benefit analysis of the chlorine industry. Students are presented with several simplified situations in which they make use of data sheets, their own experience and, if available, other source material to determine which uses of chlorine are most valuable to society.

They may conclude that some aspects of the industry should only continue with additional controls imposed upon them. The aim is to give the students an assessment tool which they can use to evaluate industrial practices and the views of critics.
