Summary

If you teach year 5 or 6, this course will give you the know-how to plan a successful curriculum, help you feel more confident in your science knowledge, and teach you how to get those outstanding results, whilst meeting the needs of each pupil and your school. 

You will spend two days exploring ways of bringing the upper KS2 curriculum to life through practical lessons and have the opportunity to bring your own ideas to try out and discuss in a safe, supportive environment away from the daily routine of school life.

This course may support you with Science Leadership Benchmark 2 - High quality science curriculum and also with Science Benchmark 4 - Purposeful practical science

Who is it for?

This course is for subject leaders and class teachers who have responsibility for year 5 and 6 science.

What topics are covered?

This two day course covers:

  • effective planning and practice in upper KS2 science 
  • progression in upper KS2 science 
  • subject knowledge and misconceptions in biology, chemistry and physics 
  • ensuring coverage of the upper KS2 science curriculum 
  • assessment of upper KS2 science 

How will you learn?

This course will be delivered face to face with participant tasks to be completed between sessions.

How long is this course?

This is a two day residential course. 

Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • develop an understanding of effective practice in upper KS2 science 
  • understand what is fundamental to effective practice in upper KS2 science
  • understand and plan for progression in primary science and where upper KS2 fits 
  • use a range of strategies and principles to better plan science lessons 
  • understand links to other areas of the curriculum and how they enhance science learning
