Are you a chemistry teacher looking to improve your understanding of the mathematics required to be successful in teaching chemistry at A level? If so, this is the perfect course for you.
We know there's an increased mathematical demand in in both the GCSE and A level chemistry specifications. This course explores a range of teaching and learning strategies for successful integration of mathematics skills in A level chemistry to develop deeper understanding of mathematics and chemistry concepts. We'll discuss how to support students to apply their GCSE mathematics knowledge in an A level context - and learn the mathematics behind the chemistry in order to teach for understanding.
Who is it for?
Teachers of chemistry who are currently teaching A level, are familiar and confident with the A level chemistry curriculum and want to develop their understanding of the mathematics underpinning the chemistry content
What topics are covered?
This two-day course covers:
- Supporting students to apply GCSE mathematics skills in A level chemistry
- Graphs: finding gradients and equations, and applying this to the rate reaction
- The mathematics behind the pH scale
- The mathematics underpinning the Arrhenius equation
- Techniques to develop mathematical reasoning, problem solving and resilience
