Virtual Multi-School Arctic Adventure Days

Wicked Weather Watch

Our whole-day virtual event provides schools across the country with a fun and exciting day of activities and lessons investigating "What Makes the Arctic So Cool?". The session includes cross-curricular education, such as team-building skills, mathematics, creative writing, and geography.

Pupils will learn about the Arctic, the tundra biome (climate, soils, flora, and fauna), the people that live there, the impacts of climate change upon this fragile region and its inhabitants, and how we can reduce our own carbon footprint here in the UK to ensure the sustainability of our planet.

The day will even provide an opportunity to hear from a real-life explorer, Nanou Blair Gould, who has traveled to the High Arctic Archipelago by ship. Among many extraordinary things, she witnessed the effects of global warming first-hand. Nanou was so invigorated by the adventure - the people, life outdoors, the sense of purpose — that she joined the ship again, working among the small crew for almost four months.

The session itself will include fun activities such as looking at the difference in climate in the UK and Svalbard, true/false activities, investigating the climate of Svalbard through a graph, a gap-fill activity all about the indigenous people of the Arctic, a sugar cube igloo challenge and a carbon footprint where they pledge to do 5 things to be better for the environment.

Expected outcomes

This event will develop key aspects of substantive knowledge, such as place and locational knowledge, physical and human geography, and geographical skills, as well as nurturing disciplinary knowledge, e.g. working and thinking like a geographer in the process. Further, this event will include key skills including geography, numeracy/maths, literacy/English, and critical thinking.

We have already impacted over 1,000 pupils in just three sessions. From previous events, we have received strong feedback stating that the pupils we work with are inspired to take care of our planet, and think like an Arctic explorer. Pupils are asked to pledge to do 5 things to be better for the environment to conclude the session and some schools even work on aspects of our day for days after our session. One school, in particular, exclaimed that they have ambitions in their class to become future prime ministers to ensure a sustainable future for all through the use of electric cars.

Our feedback from pupils includes:

"I thought it was a great experience and I'd love to do it all again. I'd love to go to the Arctic and see all the creatures in their natural environment"

"Amazing day. I loved it! It was very good. It was interesting to learn new things."

Staff feedback includes:

"We are loving the igloo challenge!"

"It's been a really useful day and learned a lot about the polar regions. Enjoyed listening to what other schools thought about the different topics. Very much enjoyed listening to the explorer - many children in the class feel that they would love to follow in her footsteps."

"Interesting; thought-provoking; eye-opening; inspiring; fantastic"
